W elcome
to Mahoney Middle School, home of
the awesome Raiders! We are one of
two middle schools in the city of
South Portland. You can find us located
a few blocks from the Casco Bay Bridge.
Our population averages between 350
and 400, with slightly more boys than
girls this year’s sixth grade.
If
you were a student here, you would
have 4 core classes, language arts,
math, social studies, and science.
Each of these classes is 55 minutes
long. You would also have 2 periods
of related arts. Related arts is made
up of a rotation of art, home economics,
industrial technology, physical education,
general music, quest, and foreign
language. Many of our students are
also involved in band and chorus.
Mahoney
has a range of programs that address
the needs of our diverse population.
We provide cross-graded math classes
for students who are academically
gifted in math. In addition we have
a number of self contained special
education classes for students identified
as academically or behaviorally challenged.
Our staff is committed to providing
the support that our students need
to be successful in their educational
career.
Beyond
the school day we have many things
going on for students to choose from.
All of our seventh and eighth graders
can elect to play a sport if they
so choose. Sixth graders can participate
in cross-country, indoor/outdoor track,
cheerleading and swimming. For students
wanting some physical activity but
not necessarily a long-term commitment,
there are intramurals. In addition,
we have an active student council,
a productive yearbook committee, a
drama group, a civil rights team,
and a school newspaper. Beyond that
you never know what activities might
arise because someone has expressed
an interest.
The
staff and the students at Mahoney
take pride in our school community.
