Ski and Snowboard Club Cancelled for the 2022 school year
From Mrs. Stilphen:
After serious consideration, I have decided to not run the program this year. The overriding factors were the long bus rides with 55 people (50 students and 5 chaperones) both to and from the mountain where the necessary expectation is to keep a mask on, and then the time in the crowded lodge. I am sure you can imagine that it is not a decision that I made lightly and I made it thinking of the health and safety of all who are involved in the club. The South Portland Rec Center is offering a ski program. This is possibly an option for some to get onto the slopes.

Recent communication out to families:
1. Those students with equipment should bring it in on the morning of our ski trips and store it in room 12. The easiest way to do this is to use the ramp door entrance which is to the right of our main entrance and head down the short flight of steps. Room 12 is straight ahead, the second door on the right.
Parents can feel free to come in and head directly there if helping their child. This is the room that we all will meet in at the end of the day in order to take attendance prior to getting on the bus. We hope to do this efficiently as the sooner we board the bus, the sooner we hit the slopes!
2. Students can eat a snack on the bus on the way up to the mountain. Shawnee Peak has a snack bar where students can buy dinner and/or they can bring food with them.
3. Those that are renting will be taken care of when we arrive. Shawnee does a great job of having the equipment out and ready -Here is the link that needs to be completed.

4. Those that signed up for lessons will be taken care of, as well!
5. We hope to return to Mahoney as close to 9:15 as possible. Members will contact their rides home from the bus as we get close in order to have a quick unload and pickup of skiers. Drop off will be in a different location this year. The bus will pull into the lower parking lot and stop just before entering the bus loop. This will allow for families to park in the lower parking lot with what I hope is easier and safer loading and pickup.
6. All club members are expected to arrive to school the next morning on time and ready for school. I know it is a late night for everyone and thank you for reinforcing this with your child.
7. Safety is our priority, however this sport has its own inherent risks. As the sign up sheet states, helmets are to be worn. Additionally, all Mahoney club members and chaperones wear a yellow armband in order to easily identify our skiers/snowboarders.
8. Parents/Guardians are always welcome to join us as chaperones. There may not be room on the bus, but you can meet us at the mountain. Please complete this form and get it to me if you think you might be interested in joining us one night. Please just let me know if you are planning on coming so I can watch for you and, if there are extras, have a pass ready!
9. And finally, and most importantly, it is expected that our members represent Mahoney in a positive and respectful manner on the bus, on the slopes and in the lodge. It is rare, but members have lost their privilege to be a part of the club due to disrespectful and/or unsafe behavior. I greatly appreciate you reinforcing this with your child.
