The
music department at Mahoney welcomes you! We offer something for
everyone, and hopefully this information will answer some questions you
may have. At any time, please ask questions or feel free to call Mrs.
Barry at 799-7386.
ENSEMBLES
6th, 7th
and 8th Grade Concert Bands: open to any student interested in playing
a concert band instrument.
Training
Jazz Band: open to any current band student, no audition necessary. The
group meets 1-2 times per week before school and performs on a limited
basis. Any instrument welcome, experience appreciated.
Performance
Jazz Band: open to any current band student, with an audition
necessary. The group rehearses at least 2 times per week before school
and performs 4 or more times a year. Jazz instruments preferred,
experience necessary.
Honors
Bands: open to 6th and 7th/8th graders by audition only. Auditions are
in November for 7th and 8th graders and 6th graders are chosen by
recommendation in October. Students must be willing to prepare audition
and festival materials in an independent manner, with guidance from
Mrs. Barry.
Improvisation
Class: open to any current band student who wishes to experiment with
the concept of improvisation in jazz music. Group will meet one time
per week for the year, day to be determined. One year of experience on
main instrument required.
Small
Ensembles: open to any current band members. Groups will be formed
based on interest and ability. A possible goal will be to perform at
Solo and Ensemble evening in January.
Extra
Support: Structured help sessions will be available after school 1-2
times per week. Any ability level welcome. Beginners,
“switchers” and “doublers” are
encouraged to
attend. Students with special projects (auditions, lessons, etc.) are
also invited to come.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Concert
Dress: White dress shirt,
ties for gentlemen, black pants or
skirts, dress shoes, black socks. Exceptions include theme concerts,
jazz concerts and parades.
Parade
Dress: Red Mahoney T-shirt,
jeans and sneakers.
Attendance:
at
performances is
crucial to the success of the ensemble. If there is a reason a student
must miss a performance, a note from parents must be received before
the performance.

Our
concerts are demonstrations of the hard work and concentration of our
students. While we hope you enjoy our product, please remember this is
also a process. Help us do our best by arriving on time, clapping at
the appropriate times, showing regard for our surroundings and giving
us your full attention. We all thank you!
