3/27
The end of week #2 of Mahoney From Home 2020 began with a nice sun rise and the prospect of a warmish spring day. Part of the routine now is to plan a break in the day that includes some fresh air. With online meetings scheduled for 8:30 and 11:30 and lots of early day emails, that break didn’t actually come until 1 pm. Teams around the district are meeting regularly, just as we would be doing any time of the year. For me today’s first meeting with tech integrators and librarians focused on sharing urgent needs of students and teachers in our individual schools, and creating a single district homebase for posting resources. We have all been putting out fires as quickly as we can while eying upcoming needs. Everyone has created their own repositories of answers and tutorials as we go. The plan is to now coordinate efforts to be most efficient and to make accessing resources as simple as possible for students, teachers and parents.
Our staff meeting followed with new information about the upcoming weeks. The Maine DOE has waived the requirement for making up days at the end of the scheduled school year. Also, the DOE is mandating some form of attendance recording to be determined by district. All teachers are already entering communication and activity completion for every student. Those students who have not been successful at connecting to this point have been contacted by phone by our terrific specialists. Andy Wallace has been getting mobile hot spot devices to homes where no Internet is available. We are hoping to have everyone connecting next week.
Most Mahoney students are completing activities and doing their best from home. And we teachers are learning what works best with which groups of learners, something we do every day of every year. No one wants to see this go on any longer than necessary. But we are confident that we can offer kids and families good opportunities to keep learning moving forward despite the limitation of distancing.
