Dear 8th Grade Parents,
For more than 20 years, South Portland 8th Grades have participated in Job Shadow Day. It is an opportunity for our students to get out in the community and explore a wide variety of career options and pathways. This year, Mahoney and Memorial will be collaborating and doing Job Shadow Day together, on Tuesday, April 30. Also new this year are several added host sites and an electronic application. In addition to individual host sites, students will have an opportunity to 'Career Sample' for the day at Portland Arts and Technology High School, You will receive the electronic application packet on Thursday, March 28. It will be due on Tuesday, April 2. FMI contact your school Counselor, or Community Partnerships Director Jane Eberle at 773-5629, ext. 3432 or eberleja@spsdme.org.
South Portland Middle School Ultimate Team: All students are welcome to join the Ultimate Frisbee team--learn to huck the disc and lay out! Practices will start indoors in April and then move outside when Wainwright fields are ready. The team will play games against other middle schools during the week and on several weekends. Sign up through the South Portland Rec Department: 767-7650.

Rippleffect: Rippleffect’s Spring program is open to 14, 6th and 7th grade students at Mahoney and is designed to develop leadership, confidence, awareness and interpersonal skills through outdoor adventure. The ROLE program consists of 4, 2.5 hour after-school sessions, a 3-day weekend on Cow Island, and a culminating graduation ceremony. Paperwork is available in the Main Office, there are 7 spots remaining!

Performance Jazz will rehearse Friday this week.
While performance jazz continues to rehearse, it’s time to start Spring Jazz! See Mrs. Barry to sign up today.
Spring Jazz will meet for the first time next Tuesday, starting at 7:40 a.m.
Color Guard practices start next Wednesday after school.
Sports News:
Indoor track practice: 3:00-4:00 in the Mahoney Gym
Swimming practice: shuttle leaves Mahoney at 3:00 (brings students to the Community Center) and returns approximately 4:40 for parent pickup.
SPRING SPORTS -
Lacrosse, Baseball and Softball - Practices begin April 1st.
Outdoor Track - Practices begin April 8th.
Sports Eligibility: Students must maintain a 2.5 HOW score, have an up to date physical on file and have signed up electronically through RankOne sports management. The website can be found here (https://southportland.rankonesport.com/New/Home.aspx).
Brown Elementary has asked us to remind students to not come on school grounds as they leave Mahoney in the afternoon. There is a lot of activity as the elementary students are dismissed and the adults are helping the younger students hop on the right bus or make their way to their parents. Thank you for reinforcing this with your student.
Homework Club runs from 3:00-4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Homework club is an opportunity for students to stay after school and complete homework or study in a quiet and safe setting.. Each day there will be at least one adult to supervise and support students. Please note that only students who plan on using this time productively are welcome.
The cafeteria is open for breakfast everyday until 8:25. Please know that only those that are eating breakfast should be in the cafeteria at this time.

Today is an early release day, students should attend their 2nd related arts classes during their RA block.
Boys Lacrosse will hav ea meeting tomorrow afternoon for all interested 7th and 8th graders.
Yearbook presale is happen now until April vacation. The cost is $27 and can be purchased with Mr. Patashnik before or after school. Yearbooks did sell out last year so come to preorder ASAP!

Rippleffect is open this Spring for 6th and 7th graders - there are still a few spots available. Representatives from Rippleffect will be at 6th and 7th grade lunches today.
The Skatepark that a fellow Mahoney student collected signatures and proposed a couple of years ago is still going strong! Come to the City Council Meeting on tonight at 6:30 to show your support!

Students, please be reminded that bags and iPads should not be brought into the cafe at breakfast or lunch. Also, all food and drink, other than water, needs to be finish and disposed of prior to heading to class.
