South Portland Swim Team has had a fantastic start to the season! Many personal bests have been achieved as well as some fantastic relays.
In our first meet against Westbrook our relay team of Anna Kuell, Katie Conley, Kiley Matthews, and Eva Rowell took first place in the 200 Medley Relay. At this same meet Calvin Comeau and Amy Zarate took first place in the 50 Freestyle.
The very next week the team went to Sanford to swim against Massabesic. At this meet, even swimming at a different pool our swimmers rose to the occasion and swam hard! Valya Jacoby-Roberts and Alice Cardale had fantastic 50 backstroke times and Jaslyn Goode had a personal best of :45.65 in the 50 Breaststroke. This week we host Scarborough at the South Portland pool on Friday, March 18th at 4pm. Come on out and cheer the swimmers on!

The Mahoney Indoor track team had another strong showing at last Saturday’s meet vs. Gorham and Moore. The girls came in second and swept all three relays. Individual event winners for the girls were Maddie Drolet, Annie von Seggern (2), Eliese Perron, Evelyn Selser and Eva Tedford. Individual event winners for the boys were Nick Boudreau (2), Anthony Nixon, Liam Piper, Joey Perron, Frank Tierney and Bram Backman.
Today is Intervention workshop for grades 7 and 8. Students be sure to check in with your teachers if you think you might benefit from some extra support!

Individual event winners for the boys team were Joey Perron, Fischer Bourassa, Paul Zechman, Nic Boudreau and Jacob Dresser. The 6th grade boys relay team also won. The girls 8th graders won their division and their relay. Individual event winners for the girls were Eva Tedford, Emily Rich, Jordan Hulsey, Kate vonSeggern, Annie von Seggern, Evelyn Selser and Morgan Anderson. A reminder to the team that there is no practice this Wednesday.

The 8th grade boys finished their season Monday night with a strong win over Westbrook by a score 45-31. they took the lead early in the 1st quarter and never surrendered it again. The boys played strong team defense the whole game. It was a great finish to a fun season. Great job Boys!

The 7th grade girls' basketball team defeated Westbrook 39-23. Fiona Stawarz was high scorer with 13 pts followed by Maria Degifico with 10 pts, Cora Boothby-Akilo with 8 pts and Allie Hanlon with 6 pts. Jaslyn Goode and Sam Hillier played well at both ends of the court. Great season girls!!
The 8th girls concluded their season with a loss to Westbrook 24-23. Taylor Maxwell had 9 points and Izzy Penny had 8 points. Good job on a great season.

The 8th grade girls were victorious over gorham 23-21. Great all around team performance by the girls. Taylor Maxwell and Poni Lako each had 6 points.
The 8th Grade boys had a tough one last night in Gorham. They will look to rebound tomorrow against Memorial.

The Boys lost to a very strong Bonney Eagle team yesterday despite staging another 20 point comeback. Great effort again by the team as they continue to improve. Calvin and Jacob Flaherty both had solid performances and Juwuan Teel led the team in scoring with 17 points.
The 7th grade girls' basketball team defeated Bonny Eagle 47-31. Allie Hanlon led scoring with 24 pts followed by Maria Degifico with 10 pts and Julia Loring with 9 pts. Good work girls!!

Singers, you were incredible last night at your concert at the High School. The show was standing room only, and we couldn’t be more proud of all of you for putting in the effort and practice to perform your best.
We have a three day weekend coming up to observe Martin Luther King Day on Monday. Many people volunteer on Monday to honor the legacy of MLK. Please take advantage of the extra day to sleep and take care of yourselves!

The 7th grade girls' basketball team defeated Lincoln 44-32. Fiona Stawarz led scoring with 12 pts followed by Cora Boothby-Akilo with 10 pts , Allie Hanlon with 8 pts, and Zoe Collins with 4 pts. Maria Degifico and Evelyn Selser did well defensively. Great team effort!
The 8th grade girls battled to the end losing to Lincoln 30-25. Everyone contributed to a great defensive game keeping all Lincoln players to single digits in scoring. Allie Hanlon and Anna Folley provided the scoring with 11 and 8 points respectively.
8th grade boys lost to Lincoln by a score of 58-53. They battled back hard after being down by 20 at one point, but there just wasn't enough time left to finish the comeback. But make no mistake, they would have. Ben Hoyt had his best game defensively for the Raiders and also chipped in 6 points in the 2nd half.

The 7th grade girls defeated Memorial 53-26. Fiona Stawarz led scoring with 16 pts while Maria Degifico, Cora Boothby-Akilo and Allie Hanlon each scored 10 pts. Julia Loring and Sam Hillier provided good help on both ends of the court. Great job girls!
The 8th grade girls lost a tough game to Memorial 60-19. Taylor Maxwell contributed 9 points.
The 7th grade boys lost a heartbreaker to cross town rival Memorial yesterday by 1. Highlight of the game was Fisher Bourassa’s 3 pointer as time expired at end of the 3rd quarter.
The 8th grade boys lost by 1 point to Memorial in what was probably the boys best played game of the season. They played together, they played gritty and most importantly they never gave up for even one single second. Outstanding team defense by every member of the team. Juwuan Teel had a game for the ages, he rebounded and defended better than any player on the court and he led all scorers with 35 points! Very well done boys!

Composting Update!
The week before winter break we averaged about 74 pounds of garbage created during lunch in the cafeteria. Last Tuesday through Friday we averaged less than 14 pounds of garbage created during lunch in the cafeteria per day. That’s about 60 pounds of waste that is being composted or recycled each day. Let’s keep it up this week!
Ski & Snowboard Club will start this Tuesday, January 12th! Please bring your equipment to school in the morning and take it to Room 114 to be stored safely for the day. All skiers and Riders will change into ski clothes and meet in room 114 before getting on the bus at 2:30.

The 7th grade girls' basketball team defeated Lyman Moore 67-16. Allie Hanlon scored 23 pts followed by Maria Degifico with 19, Cora Boothby-Akilo and Fiona Stawarz with 8, and Julia Loring with 7 pts.
The 8th grade girls played a great team game to beat Lyman Moore 33-20. Poni Lako led the way with 10 points and Anna Folley finished with 9.
Despite scoring 43 points and going 10 of 14 from the foul line the 8th grade boys lost to Lyman Moore yesterday. Garon Kelley scored 15 and Juwuan Teel added 10. Great team effort as 8 out of ten of the boys scored points for the team.

The 7th grade girls basketball team had an exciting game with Lincoln 25-24. Maria Degifico was game high scorer with 10 pts, followed by Julia Loring with 7 pts and Cora Boothby-Akilo with 6 pts. Great defensive play by Sam Hillier helped secure the win for the Raiders!
The 8th grade girls battled Lincoln, but ran out of steam to lose 41-29. Taylor Maxwell led all scorers with 22 points. Next home game is Monday December 21st against Scarborough.
The 8th grade boys had too little too late in their loss to Lincoln and couldn't repeat their comeback ways from monday. Good hustle by everyone in the 4th quarter that they can hopefully carry over to Mondays game against Scarborough.
None of our basketball teams will be practicing this afternoon.

Basketball Recaps
The 7th grade girls suffered a tough loss, 43-39, to Gorham in overtime. Allie Hanlon led all scorers with 21 pts followed by Maria Degifico with 8 and Cora Boothby-Akilo with 7. Great team defensive effort!
The 8th grade girls lost to Gorham 35-25 last night. Olivia Cloutier had 8 points for the Raiders. Come see our next game at home against Lincoln on Thursday.
7th grade Boys lost a tough game to a big, athletic Gorham team yesterday 33-18.
The 8th grade boys fell behind 34-15 in the first half of their game against Gorham but came out inspired in the 2nd half and worked themselves back into a tie game at the end of regulation. The boys, refused to give up and ended up winning 47-46 in overtime!!! The teams 1st win was keyed by big baskets down the stretch from Tyler Small and Jacob Flaherty. Garon Kelley led all scorers with 16 points, Juwuan Teel and Ryan Brewer each added 9 points. Overall a fantastic team victory!!!

Robotics News
The South Portland Middle School Red Riots Robotics Team represented South Portland well at the Maine First Lego League State Competition in Augusta on Saturday. The team received praise for their innovative project presentation and for their team work in the teamwork challenge. In addition, they finished 7th out of 60 teams in the robot challenge and they received the second place programming trophy.
Congratulations to Simon Bourque, Jada Briley, Lucas Lefebvre, Drew Lewis, Ryan O'Hare, Ben Teague and Harry Weisenburger.

Basketball Game Recaps
The 7th Grade girls defeated King 51-18. Fiona Stawarz scored 18 points, while Allie Hanlon had 16 pts and Maria Degifico added 11 points and many great passes to teammates. Great defensive play by Fiona Stawarz and Evelyn Selser.
The mahoney 8th grade girls got their 1st win of the season against King middle school 42-25. Taylor Maxwell led the team with 14 points and Olivia Cloutier added 10 points. Nice job girls!!!
The 7th grade boys got their first victory of the season defeating King Middle School yesterday. The Raiders were led by Anthony Nixon’s inspired play on both ends of the floor!
8th grade boys played hard and played well in the 2nd half of their loss to King but it just wasn't enough to overcome a sluggish 1st half. Look out once this team strings together two good halves however because they could beat anyone if they do! Newcomer Brady Giesecke came off the bench and scored his first 4 points for Mahoney all the result of tough defense and aggressive rebounding.

The 7th grade girls team won their first game against Windham, 40-27. Fiona Stawarz led all scorers with 13 pts, followed by Cora Boothby-Akilo with 10 pts, Maria Degifico with 7 pts and Allie Hanlon with 6 pts. Great team effort, girls!
The mahoney 8th girls opened their season against windham last night. They fought hard, but came up short, losing 39-34. Olivia Cloutier led the scoring with 10 points. Taylor Maxwell and Poni Lako each had 8 points. Good job girls!!!!
7th Grade Boys lost their season opener to Windham. Luca Desjardins lead the Raiders with 12 points
The 8th grade boys lost to Windham yesterday despite the fact they came out strong and were only down 2 at the half and played well in the 2nd half but just couldn't get enough good shots to fall. Bobby Bruce had his best game in a Mahoney uniform leading all scorers with 10 points. Garon Kelley also had one of his best games for Mahoney playing tenacious defense and controlling the offense.

The SoPo Middle School Red Riots Robotics Team had a great showing at the Maine First Lego League Qualifiers in Kennebunk on Saturday. Not only did they qualify for the State Championships on December 12th at the Augusta Civic Center, they also received the first place programming trophy. Stuff a Bus” is a non-perishable food drive and is held here at Mahoney from November 16 - November 20. The Preble Street soup kitchen serves over 1,100 meals every day. So we need your help.
