Dear 8th Grade Parents,
For more than 20 years, South Portland 8th Grades have participated in Job Shadow Day. It is an opportunity for our students to get out in the community and explore a wide variety of career options and pathways. This year, Mahoney and Memorial will be collaborating and doing Job Shadow Day together, on Tuesday, April 30. Also new this year are several added host sites and an electronic application. In addition to individual host sites, students will have an opportunity to 'Career Sample' for the day at Portland Arts and Technology High School, You will receive the electronic application packet on Thursday, March 28. South Portland Middle School Ultimate Team: All students are welcome to join the Ultimate Frisbee team--learn to huck the disc and lay out! Practices will start indoors in April and then move outside when Wainwright fields are ready. The team will play games against other middle schools during the week and on several weekends. Sign up through the South Portland Rec Department: 767-7650.

Rippleffect: Rippleffect’s Spring program is open to 14, 6th and 7th grade students at Mahoney and is designed to develop leadership, confidence, awareness and interpersonal skills through outdoor adventure. The ROLE program consists of 4, 2.5 hour after-school sessions, a 3-day weekend on Cow Island, and a culminating graduation ceremony. Paperwork is available in the Main Office, there are 7 spots remaining!
Parents feel free to come check out our lost and found outside the Main office. There are water bottles, sports bags and many jackets. Everything will be donated to Goodwill over February break.
Yearbook: A reminder to yearbook staff twice a week meetings will start this week. Yearbook staff will meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The MS State Jazz Festival is this Saturday, March 23rd at Westbrook HS. Go Mahoney! Remember; we are meeting AT Westbrook HS by 6:45 a.m. Yes, a.m. Come help load up after school and get your instrument and music! Good luck!

Sports News:
Indoor track practice: 3:00-4:00 in the Mahoney Gym
Swimming practice: shuttle leaves Mahoney at 3:00 (brings students to the Community Center) and returns approximately 4:40 for parent pickup.
SPRING SPORTS - Sign ups are outside the main office. Baseball, softball and lacrosse are open to both 7th and 8th graders while outdoor track is open to all grades. Practices begin Monday, April 1st.
Sports Eligibility: Students must maintain a 2.5 HOW score, have an up to date physical on file and have signed up electronically through RankOne sports management. The website can be found here (https://southportland.rankonesport.com/New/Home.aspx).
Brown Elementary has asked us to remind students to not come on school grounds as they leave Mahoney in the afternoon. There is a lot of activity as the elementary students are dismissed and the adults are helping the younger students hop on the right bus or make their way to their parents. Thank you for reinforcing this with your student.
Homework Club runs from 3:00-4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Homework club is an opportunity for students to stay after school and complete homework or study in a quiet and safe setting.. Each day there will be at least one adult to supervise and support students. Please note that only students who plan on using this time productively are welcome.
The cafeteria is open for breakfast everyday until 8:25. Please know that only those that are eating breakfast should be in the cafeteria at this time.

Students, please be reminded that bags and iPads should not be brought into the cafe at breakfast or lunch. Also, all food and drink, other than water, needs to be finish and disposed of prior to heading to class.
